Does acupuncture hurt?
While most acupuncturists will tell you that acupuncture doesn't hurt (and most patients of AHS will tell you that an acupuncture treatment is quite relaxing) the chance of feeling some discomfort during an acupuncture treatment is not zero. It really depends on several factors:
The experience of the acupuncturist
Perhaps the most important factor. The same treatment can be performed by different acupuncturists on the same patient, and the practitioner with the most clinical experience, defter fingers, and a more pleasant bedside manner will produce the most pain-free experience.
With twenty years of clinical experience, the treatments you will receive at Acupuncture Health Services of Falmouth are guaranteed to be as pleasant and pain-free as possible.
The size of the needles being used
Acupuncture needles range in thickness from .4mm to 1.4mm, much thinner than the type of needle used for shots. Different styles of acupuncture employ different ranges of size. For examle, a Japanese-style trained acupuncturist typically uses the thinnest needles, while Chinese-style tends toward the thickest needles. Korean-style needles are medium thickness. An acupuncturist will keep a variety of sizes on hand to meet your comfort level.
At Acupuncture Health Services of Falmouth, we use primarily Japanese and Korean style needles so your treatment is gentle and relaxing. All needles are single-use, sterilized surgical stainless steel and disposable.
The patient's own pain threshold
This is actually influenced not only by physiology (i.e. your physical pain tolerance), but also culturally. A more stoic culture, such as China where acupuncture developed, is more accepting of the sensation produced by the thicker needles often used by Chinese acupuncturists
